Step-by-step guide to renovating a garden bench

Step-by-step guide to renovating a garden bench

Is your wooden garden bench looking past its best? Has the paint cracked and lost its lustre? Has the wood turned grey from UV rays, rain and temperature changes? With BOCHEMIT, it will be as good as new! You just need to follow a few simple steps:

  • If the bench is composed of any other materials, metal in our case, disassemble the bench if possible. Clean, sand down and repaint the metal parts.
  • Remove dirt from the wood surface.
  • For mould-infested wood, do not remove the mould using a cloth, brush or other tool. To do so would only spread the problem by dispersing hazardous spores through the air. Instead, use BOCHEMIT Anti-mould.  Before applying the product for the first time, test it on a small, concealed part of the wood. Then spray on from a distance of 10–15 cm and let it do its work. After 15-20 minutes, rinse the treated area with water. There is no need to use a garden hose or pressure cleaner. Alternatively, you can leave it to dry. Repeat several times for wood that is highly greyed or mould-infested.
  • Lightly sand down the wood so that it can better soak up the impregnating agent and glaze.
  • Once you have disassembled the bench disassembled, we recommend directly impregnating it against wood-decaying insects, fungi and mould. This will prolong its useful life. Temperature fluctuations and rain cause wood to shrink and expand, causing cracks to appear. For larger cracks, unimpregnated timber is more susceptible to infestation from biotic pests, which can penetrate the wood through these cracks. BOCHEMIT QB Hobby - in its colourless format - should do the trick. A one-kilo bottle will be enough to treat a small bench.
  • Once the impregnating agent has dried (after 4 to 24 hours, depending on the temperature and humidity), apply BOCHEMIT Estetik, an enamel impregnation solution, to the wood on all directions. Just choose your preferred shade. Mix thoroughly and do not dilute. Two or three layers of paint should be applied to benches and other outdoor fixtures, depending on the absorbance properties of the substrate. We used a pine hue for our beech bench. One can was enough to treat three benches.
  • The wood is touch-dry in around six hours, which is when you can start adding another coat.
  • The wood is completely dry 24 hours after applying the final coat. Finally, reassemble the bench, sit down and help yourself to a cuppa!
